Taluk panchayat to train artisans

Special Correspondent

MANGALORE: The Mangalore Taluk Panchayat will take up the Rural Artisan Project introduced under the micro economic development component of the rural development programme.

Outlining the features of the programme at the taluk panchayat meeting here on Wednesday, the Executive Officer of the taluk panchayat, Ramananda Nayak, said rural artisans will be identified by a committee which will have officials and will be headed by the taluk panchayat President and the Executive Officer. The programme aims at creating a market in the taluk headquarters for the products made by the artisans. The programme will also train rural artisans in producing artefacts that meet the requirement of the market. Each artisans will be given incentives, he added.

There are various schemes and criteria to choose the artisans as beneficiaries of the programme, which will be monitored on a day-to-day basis, he said. He said many schemes initiated by the Karnataka Village Industries Commission will also be available under the programme. A list of the beneficiaries will be prepared shortly.

Skeptical

However, members of the taluk panchayat were sceptical about the programme as they felt that the criteria to select rural artisans are faulty.

The meeting also witnessed some acrimonious scenes when a member pointed out that the Women and Child Welfare Department is transferring anganwadi workers. This could jeopardise the working of anganwadi centres.

Answering queries on this account, the Executive Officer said some officials are needed in the headquarters to closely monitor the working of the anganwadi centres and also to take up government programmes in the Women and Child Welfare Department. Hence, the transfers have become inevitable.
