CHENNAI: "Balaji, in another six months I will be sending my mother to your Home," a middle-aged visitor threw these words over his shoulder as he walked out of an auditorium in Mylapore last week. His mother is 92 years old. With over 25 inmates in two different places, Rajagopala Balaji, founder-managing trustee of Prasanthi Old Age Welfare Home, thinks "it is time we understood better our parents' role in our lives. More such homes should not come up," he says. Balaji began his home for the aged in 1998. It has expanded into two branches Maduravoyal and Chinmaya Nagar. The home at Maduravoyal caters to destitute elderly people while the one at Chinmaya Nagar houses elders who earn pension and can pay for their stay. S. Ratnavel Pandian, former Supreme Court Judge, inaugurated the home. He was present on the seventh anniversary of the home on Wednesday. As were stage-and-film artiste S.Ve. Shekar and Bharatnatyam dancer Srikala Bharath.
