MADURAI: The Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court on Wednesday granted an interim injunction restraining the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Madurai from constructing a church building on cemetery land near the Periyar bus stand. Hearing a public interest litigation moved against the construction, A Division Bench comprising Justice K.P. Sivasubramaniam and Justice S.K. Krishnan also directed the diocese to file a detailed counter affidavit within a week. According to the petitioner, the Corporation in 1993 passed a resolution to extend the bus stand on the cemetery land and to compensate the Diocese with an alternative site. But, the State Government rejected the move, following which the Diocese was now constructing a church on the vacant area in the cemetery.
