MADURAI: A call to policy makers and the Government to end discrimination against Muslim women was made by the Tamil Nadu Movement for Women. Claimed that gross discrimination was being meted out to the Muslim women in the name of Muslim Personal Law, the movement expressed the hope that the State Government would initiate appropriate measures aimed at improving the condition of Muslim women. For instance, it could help bring about changes favouring the interests of the women in the law and ensure their uplift. A resolution, adopted at the coordination meeting held under the joint auspices of Tamil Nadu Movement for Women and the Women Development Resource Centre, Madurai, with the centre's Programme Director, Manohari Doss, in the chair, here recently, said the Government should take steps to ensure the rights of the Muslim women, effecting changes in the triple talaq. The Central and State Governments should make budgetary allocation and provide special grants to the Muslim women to encourage them to take up income generating activities on their own. About 69 Muslim women from slum areas and also members of the Madurai Urban Muslim Women's Federation participated in the meeting. Parveen Banu, welcomed the gathering. Mangaiyarkarasi, explaining the highlights of the programme, said the federation was essential to help the oppressed women attain independence, she said.Juliet Latha, chaired panel discussions on several crucial topics such as child sex determination, denial of higher education, evils of drinking, Muslim Personal Law system, denial of entry to women into mosques, triple talaq, etc.
