IAS officers unhappy over ACB raid on Home Secretary residence

Special Correspondent

Stunned by the development, top brass charges sleuths with non-adherence to due procedures

HYDERABAD: Controversy is brewing over the raid by the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) on the residence of the Principal Secretary, Home, J.P. Murthy, in connection with the temple land scam, with a section of IAS officers alleging that due procedures were not followed.

An IAS officer, who did not wish to be identified, said that though the IAS officers were not "backing" Mr. Murthy, they felt that the method adopted was "high-handed".

The ACB officials should have followed due procedures and obtained the permission of the Chief Secretary, he added.

Another IAS officer said that his colleagues were "stunned" by the development. "It is nobody's case that raids should not be conducted. But they ought to be done as provided by the law". He indicated that the IAS Officers Association might meet in a day or two to discuss the matter since it had caused distress and concern among the members. ACB sources, however, denied the allegation that due procedures were not followed.

A senior official reacted angrily by saying that the IAS officers were `ignorant' about the procedures followed in conducting the raid.
