Doctor found dead in hospital

Staff Reporter

NEW DELHI: A 32-year-old lady doctor was found dead under highly mysterious circumstances inside the Safdarjung Hospital premises here on Wednesday. There were superficial injuries on the body and police have not ruled out foul play.

According to the police, the body of Mamta Bihari, who had been working in the Gynaecology Department at Safdarjung Hospital for the past one month, was found behind the nurses' hostel on the hospital campus by a security guard around 2-30 p.m. Sunburns on the body indicated that it had been lying out in the sun for over three hours.

The hospital authorities shifted the body to the mortuary after the police arrived on the scene.

Mamta's friends told the police that they were searching for her and around 4 p.m. they were informed that her body had been found. Enquiries revealed that Mamta, from Orissa, was doing internship in the hospital after completing her education from a medical college in Ukraine.

She was provided an accommodation on the fourth floor of the nurses' hostel.

The hospital authorities said that on Wednesday, she joined duty around 9-30 a.m. and remained in Ward No. 7 of the Out Patient Department till about 11-30 a.m., after which she left and went missing.

"Circumstantial evidence suggest that it is a case of suicide, but the post-mortem report would reveal the real cause of her death," said the Deputy Commissioner of Police (South-West Delhi), Deependra Pathak, adding that other angles were also being investigated.

According to the police, Mamta was planning to marry a doctor who had also passed out from the same college in Ukraine and is doing his internship in Safdarjung Hospital.
