This brings to an end the dry spell over the region for more than a week
GUWAHATI: After a long wait, the monsoon arrived in the north-eastern states barring Guwahati and its neighbourhood on Thursday, ending the dry spell over the region for more than a week. Announcing its arrival, the Regional Meteorological Centre, Guwahati, issued a general bulletin stating that South West monsoon had advanced over Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura and parts of Assam. Light to moderate rain occurred at a few places over the region with isolated heavy rainfall over Arunachal Pradesh, Assam and Meghalaya over 24 hours, a Met office bulletin said. D. Chakrabarty, Deputy Director-General of Meteorology, Regional Meteorological Centre, told The Hindu that the monsoon would be delayed in the city by another day though there was pre-monsoon rain in the city. Day temperatures fell appreciably over Manipur and Mizoram, fell over Arunachal Pradesh and changed a little over the rest of the region. In Nagaland it was above normal. The amount of rainfall recorded at various places of the region were: Dhubri - 12cm, Bhalukpung - 7 cm, Phek - 6 cm, Itanagar, Karimganj and Silchar - 3 cm each, Shillong, Dharmatul, Kampur and A.P. Ghat - 2 cm each, Dibrugarh, Kokrajhar - 1 cm each. According to the farmer's weather bulletin valid until the morning of June 18 issued by the Met office, moderate rain/thundershowers are likely to occur at many places over Assam, Meghalaya, Manipur and Mizoram and light to moderate rain/thundershower is likely to occur over Arunachal Pradesh.
