Kharif pre-season intensive campaign inaugurated

FOR BETTER PRODUCTION: The Commissioner for Agriculture, Jagmohan Singh Raju, handing over a coconut sapling to a farmer at a function held at Puliyankudi on Wednesday.

TIRUNELVELI: All officials attached to the Department of Agriculture should visit villages everyday without fail so that they could clarify doubts of farmers and render valuable suggestions to ensure better production, the Commissioner for Agriculture, Jagmohan Singh Raju, has said.

Speaking at the inauguration of kharif pre-season intensive campaign at Puliyangudi on Wednesday, Mr. Raju said that more concentration on villages would bring farmers and officials closer, which would ultimately enhance revenue of agriculturists.

"If officials fail to visit villages, farmers may contact me on 98405 - 22122 for immediate action against erring officials," Mr. Raju said.

Under the dry land development programme, a deep borewell would be sunk for every 10 acre.

Farmers, employing drip irrigation system in their land would get 50 per cent subsidy, he noted.

Mr. Raju handed over free coconut saplings to parents of two girl children on this occasion.

The Collector, Atul Anand, said that crop productivity had increased by 31 per cent, thanks to 22 per cent excess rainfall recorded in the district in the last monsoon.

As many irrigation tanks and dams had sufficient storage, water had been released for `kar' cultivation.

"Since the district has received Rs.4 crores under dry land development programme, 5,000 hectare arid land would be converted into irrigation land during this fiscal," the Collector informed.

The Assistant General Manager, NABARD, K. Sridharan, the lead district manager, S. Nambiraj, the Dean, Killikulam Agriculture College and Research Institute, T.M. Thiyagarajan, participated in the function.
