PONDICHERRY: Ruling Congress legislator and former Minister K. Lakshminarayanan along with a large number of residents of Cassicadai Assembly constituency were arrested for staging a road roko here to protest against the `failure' of the Pondicherry Government in addressing grievances of the people. Earlier, the agitators including women took out a procession from Ajanata Theatre junction on the northern wing of the town to stage the picketing. Braving the hot sun the picketers squatted on the road for more than 20 minutes. Addressing the agitators Mr.Lakshminarayanan said that the Government was `wantonly meting out a step motherly treatment' to his constituency. He said that Mission Street was busiest segment in the town. But repair works on the road had not been attended to for years. Surfacing of the road had not been done causing hindrance to traffic flow and the shopping public. House site pattas were not available to the poor in the coastal belt in the Cassicadai constitueny. Tsunami relief and rehabilitation works did not benefit fishermen families of the Vazhaikulam and Kuruskuppam hamlets and residents of Sinnayapuram were neglected by the Government, he said.
`Stir will continue'
Mr.Lakshminarayanan said that there should be a firm assurance by the government either through the Chief Secretary or the Collector that the basic amenities would be available without discrimination to the residents in Cassicadai. He said that the agitation would continue till the grievances were settled. A section of agitators raised slogans against the Chief Minister, N. Rangasamy.
