Hubli-Dharwad
Staff Correspondent
DHARWAD: The Malaprabha Grameen Bank plans to adopt 10 "balawadis" (playgroups) in Dharwad and five in Hubli, said the Chairman of the bank, B.S. Surendra. Speaking at a function organised to mark the adoption of a balawadi started by Akshara Foundation in a slum here recently, Mr. Surendra said depending upon the success of the initiative, the bank would extend the programme to other districts where it has its branches. The bank already has a scheme of giving cash prizes to meritorious students from rural areas, he said. The children from the slums have a right to good education and the society should respond positively in this regard, he added. The foundation plans to extend its activities in North Karnataka as the region seems to be lagging behind in providing basic education, said Rohini Nilekani, Chairperson of the Akshara Foundation. Apart from starting anganwadis and balawadis, the foundation is also contemplating starting a mobile library. Speaking on the occasion, P.S. Vastrad, Commissioner of Public Instruction, North Western Region, lauded the bank and the foundation for joining hands with the Government in its endeavour to provide education for all.
