DHARWAD: The Minister for Cooperation, R.V. Deshpande, on Thursday said he is willing to take over from B. Janardhana Poojary as the Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee President if the party desires so. Speaking to presspersons here, Mr. Deshpande said he will not lobby for the post. But he will not flinch from handling the responsibility entrusted to him. Mr. Deshpande said he has been a Minister and the Leader of the Opposition and he is interested in handling organisational responsibilities also. Though a meeting of the party functionaries is slated to be held on June 27 to select a nominee for the post, the decision is ultimately in the hands of the party President, Sonia Gandhi. Mr. Deshpande denied reports that efforts are underway to replace the Chief Minister, N. Dharam Singh. He said he is confident that Mr. Singh will have an undisturbed tenure as the Chief Minister. There will be no efforts to pull down the coalition Government, he reiterated. On the possible return of the Maharashtra Governor, S.M. Krishna, to active politics, Mr. Deshpande said it is an issue between Mr. Krishna and Ms. Sonia Gandhi.
`An asset'
As a seasoned politician endowed with political and administrative experience, Mr. Krishna will surely be an asset to the party if he chooses to return to State politics. But there is no question of Mr. Krishna replacing Mr Dharam Singh, he added.
