Tree plantation to be resumed under Gram Sadak programme in district

  • Officials told to ensure that fertilizers are supplied to farmers
  • Dharwad has received good rainfall which may help kharif sowing
  • Supply of textbooks and uniforms for government schools has begun
  • 1,410 houses to be constructed under Indira Awas Yojana

DHARWAD: Shantavva Gonal, President of the Dharwad Zilla Panchayat, on Wednesday instructed the officials of the Agricultural Department to ensure that certified seeds are made available to the farmers in the district.

Presiding over a meeting held to review the development programmes here, Ms Gonal stated that the district had received good rainfall which augured well for the kharif season and steps should be taken to see that there was no scarcity of seeds and fertilizers for the farmers.

To ensure that the problem of poor quality seeds did not recur, she asked for rechecking of the certified seeds before distributing them. She also suggested that the work on tree plantation on the roadsides be taken up while implementing the gram sadak programme. It was informed in the meeting that the taluk wise list of the group and individual beneficiaries under the Swarna Jayanti Swarojgar programme would be obtained before the 20th of this month, as 57 groups and 73 individuals had been chosen from the district for it. An action plan of Rs. 650 lakhs had been prepared under the programme, where the first instalment of Rs. 2 crores and 644 m.tonnes of wheat and 5588 m. tonnes of rice had already been released.

    Primary schools reopen

M.H. Sharief, Deputy Director of Public Instruction, said that all primary schools had started functioning from this month and supply of textbooks and uniforms to the Government schools has begun. The programme of bringing dropouts back to schools had met with considerable success, he added.

Ms. Gonal suggested that the taluk and the district level officials pay regular visits to the night schools where the programme of neoliteracy was in progress.

A target of 1,410 houses has been fixed for the district under Indira Awas Yojana for the year 2005-06 for construction of houses for the homeless. An amount of Rs. 90 lakhs had been released for the works, which would start when the list containing the names of the beneficiaries would be obtained from Dharwad and Kundgol taluks, said Ms. Gonal.
