Protest against misuse of image
Staff Reporter
MUMBAI:
On learning that Mahatma Gandhi's image was being used to sell Indian takeaway food by a franchisee in Australia, his great grandson, Tushar Gandhi, urged the Central Government to take action against the "exploitation" of Gandhi's image, which "is protected under the Indian Constitution and the National Emblems Act."
The website of the food franchisee (www.handighandi.com) , which is based in New South Wales, shows a sketch of Mahatma Gandhi holding a takeaway of curry against a background of minarets with the words "Handi Gandhi: Great curries...No worries." Next to the image are bowls of different dishes. The site also has a jingle called "Handi Ghandi," and the words go "I am Handi Ghandi, eat my curries."
"I am against such irreverent use of the Mahatma's image," Tushar Gandhi told The Hindu.
