Environment clearance for housing project
Staff Correspondent
NEW DELHI:
The Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) committee of the Ministry of Environment and Forests has cleared the Rs. 139-crore housing project at Madhurawada on the outskirts of Visakhapatnam in Andhra Pradesh.
The 11-storeyed building, comprising 2,000 higher and middle-income group flats, is being developed by the Visakhapatnam Urban Development Authority (VUDA).
The clearance for the project came at the Environmental Assessment Committee meeting last month.
As the proposed site falls in the peripheral area of a protected Buddhist monument, the VUDA will have to keep the Archaeology and Museum Departments informed of the project activities during the construction period and ensure that no damage is caused to the archaeological sites located nearby.
Also, felling of trees will have to be restricted to the minimum. Any tree that needs to be removed shall be relocated to the extent possible and where relocation is not possible, thrice the number of trees felled will have to be planted.
