Special Correspondent
NEW DELHI:
The Union Cabinet's Committee on Economic Affairs on Thursday approved a slew of measures in the health sector. This includes a Rs. 184-crore plan for upgrading facilities at the Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education and Research(JIPMER), Pondicherry.
A world class drug research institute in Lucknow will be set up at a cost of Rs. 190 crores, it was decided.
The scheme for JIPMER includes construction of a 360-bed super-specialty block and a trauma care centre.
The CCEA spokesperson and Finance Minister, P. Chidambaram, said that after the improvements, JIPMER would become a multi-disciplinary teaching and treatment centre, with an increase not only in bed strength but also in student intake capacity.
The CCEA approved a grant of Rs. 504 crores from the Global Fund for HIV/AIDS, TB and Malaria for providing anti-retroviral drugs for HIV/AIDS patients in Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Delhi, Maharashtra, Manipur and Meghalaya.
Another grant of Rs. 317 crores was cleared for anti-malaria activities in West Bengal, Orissa, Jharkhand, Assam, Tripura, Arunachal Pradesh, Meghalaya, and Manipur.
