ISLAMABAD: Stung by criticism from within and outside, particularly Washington, over the decision to put a gang rape victim in the Exit Control List (ECL), Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz has directed immediate removal of her name from the list. Mukhtaran Mai, pursuing a legal battle against the perpetrators, has emerged as a legend in Pakistan for her courage. An overzealous bureaucracy had banned her from leaving the country after she received an invitation from a human rights organisation to visit the U.S. and speak about her experience in fighting the culprits. Gang raped on the orders of a village council in 2002, Ms. Mai told journalists that she had decided to cancel her trip abroad and urged the Government to take her name out of the ECL.The Prime Minister's Adviser on Women Development Nilofar Bakhtiar has said that Ms. Mai was facing some problems because of the security provided for her protection. Ms. Mai said she had changed her mind about the visit because of her mother's illness, but rights groups doubted the claim, saying it was a statement made under Government pressure.
