Shaughnessy and Koukalova move up

Eastbourne (Netherlands): Klara Koukalova beat Denisa Chladkova 6-3, 6-3 on Thursday to reach the semifinals of the Ordina Open.

Meghann Shaughnessy also advanced when Dutch teenager Michaella Krajicek pulled out of the first set of their match with a twisted knee.

Koukalova's win over her fellow Czech kept alive her chances of at least matching last year's performance at this Wimbledon warm-up, when she was runner-up.

Krajicek was a break up at 4-3 when she turned at the net to watch Shaughnessy's passing shot sail past and twisted her right knee. She limped off the court, then was wheeled off in tears to the locker room.

It was the first time Krajicek, 16, had reached a quarterfinal, and only her ninth top-level tournament.

Mauresmo beaten

Top-seeded Amelie Mauresmo lost her first grasscourt match of the season to Russian qualifier Vera Douchevina in the second round here on Wednesday. Douchevina won 6-4, 6-4.

Third-seeded Alicia Molik withdrew and will also miss Wimbledon after failing to recover from an ear infection that kept her out of the French Open. The Australian was replaced in the draw by American Mashona Washington, who beat France's Virginie Razzano 7-6(4), 6-4.

Robredo, Coria bow out

Top-seeded Tommy Robredo and second-seeded Guillermo Coria both lost at the Ordina Open on Wednesday, while Nadia Petrova and Dinara Safina advanced to the women's quarterfinals.

Lars Burgsmuller, a 30-year-old German who hadn't won a match in his last eight tournaments, ousted Spain's Robredo 6-2, 7-6(5).

Jan Hernych of the Czech Republic knocked out Coria, a finalist in Den Bosch last year. Hernych won 6-3, 6-4.

The results: At Den Bosch (Ordina Open): Second round: Men: Lars Burgsmuller bt Tommy Robredo 6-2, 7-6(5); Jan Hernych bt Guillermo Coria 6-3, 6-4.

Women: Quarterfinals: Meghann Shaughnessy bt Michaella Krajicek 3-4 (retd.); Klara Koukalova bt Denisa Chladkova 6-3, 6-3; Lucie Safarova bt Dinara Safina 6-4, 6-4; Gisela Dulko bt Nadia Petrova 6-4, 4-6, 6-3.
