TIRUPATI: The Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) is all set to release broadband, a high-speed Internet connection, into the Tirupati market next week. Hyderabad got hooked to the Nigam's broadband network, branded "DataOne", on January 14 when the service was launched in major cities in the country, while Vijayawada has started giving connections very recently. Though Tirupati will get broadband next week, it is planned to extend the service initially to areas covered under the Tirupati Main, Korlagunta and Vidyanagar exchanges only. While the corporation has the technology to provide as many as 1,100 connections, only 60 modems have been received so far, while the rest is expected to reach Tirupati very soon. On the other hand, only 450 applications have been received from the public so far. The process goes like this. The phone mechanic, accompanied by a Junior Telecom Officer, will visit the premises of the applicants, physically provide the connection and load the relevant software, while the `login' will be created at the Nigam headquarters. Though the number of applications received is far from satisfactory, the company hopes to attract the public once it starts providing connections. The General Manager of BSNL-Tirupati, A.Subba Rao, exuded confidence of roping in more customers as in DataOne, one could speak over telephone simultaneously while browsing the net at an unimaginably high speed. "The CDMA-based connections allow an average speed of 115 kbps, while those offered through cable, a mere 40 kbps. Similarly, in the connections provided through coaxial cable by some of the multi system operators (Cable TV MSOs), the speed will come down drastically when the grid is shared by a large number of browsers. But, our dedicated line ensures that the promise of 256 kbps speed is never breached", he explained.
