Three new records set on first day

Gauri Desai of Maharashtra lived up to the pre-meet predictions as she set a new meet record in 50m breaststroke in girls' group IV event.

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Three records were set on the opening day of the 22nd National aquatic championships at the Water Works swimming pool here on Thursday. Maharashtra led the medals tally after winning five gold medals in swimming and four in diving events on the first day.

Gauri Desai of Maharashtra lived up to the pre-meet predictions as she set a new meet record in 50m breaststroke in girls' group IV event. Gauri led from start-to-finish to clock 0:40.69 seconds and erased the old mark of (0:42.19) set by team-mate Kalyani Basu in 2003.

Purva Shetye of Maharashtra upset pre-race favourite M.M. Venpa (Tamil Nadu) to win girls 100m breaststroke (group III) event and in the process set a new record. Purva pipped Venpa, who broke the existing record in the heats, at the finish in an exciting final. Purva clocked 1:25.43 for the gold while Venpa came second with 1:25.72. The third placed Arpanjit Kaur (Punjab) also came inside the existing mark.

New mark by Surabhi

Maharashtra's Surabhi Tipre set a new record in 200m freestyle girls (group III). Winning easily Surabhi clocked 2:23.81 to improve Aditi Kulkarni's old mark (2:24.24s) set in 2003.

Maharshtra won all the four gold medals at stake in diving.

Mihir Savla won the 1m springboard in boys group III category with 205.25 points. Rupali Shah won the high board diving in group I (288.80 pts) while Hrutika Shriram won the gold in group II category with 262.65 points and Kejki Ajay Shinde completed the sweep for Maharshtra by winning the gold in group III category with 178.85 points.

The results: Boys (Group III): 200m freestyle: 1. Ajinkya Walimbe (Mah), 2. Gaurav Verliani (Mah), 3. Rudra Arjun Rao (Kar), (2:20.52). 50m butterfly: 1. Gopi Nath Kayal (Ben), 2. S. Abhinav (Kar), 3. C.M. Sai Prasad (AP), (0:32.00). 100m breaststroke: 1. Karan Singh (Del), 2. Anjan Misra (UP), 3. Swarup Mondal (1.22.82).

Group IV: 50m butterfly: 1.Yudhisthir Jaisingh (Mah), 2. L.Shreyas (Kar), 3. K.S.Prajwal (Kar), (0:33.66). 50m breast stroke: 1. Bhargav Phukan (Asm), 2. Virag Shah (Mah), 3. Soham Mhatre (Mah), (0:41.63).

Girls (Group III): 200m freestyle: 1. Surabi Tipre (Mah), 2. M.M. Venpa (TN), 3. V. Vaibhavi (Kar), (2:23.81 - New Meet Record; Old Record - 2:24.24, Aditi Kulkarni, 2003). 50m butterfly: 1. Arhatha Magavi (Kar), 2. Swathi Sharma (AP), 3. M.Hemanthika (TN), (0:33.68). 100m breaststroke: 1. Purva Shetye (Mah), 2. M.M. Venpa (TN), 3. Arpanjit Kaur (Pun), (1:25.43 - NMR; OR - 1:27.18, M.M. Venpa, 2005).

Group IV: 50m butterfly: 1. Prathima Kollali (Kar), 2. R.C. Sanskruthi (Kar), 3. Vandita Dhariya (Guj), (0:36.34). 50m breaststroke: 1. Gauri Desai (Mah), 2. C. Lawanya (TN), 3. Priyanka Priyadarshini (Del), (0:40.69 - NMR; OR - Kalyani Basu, 2003).

Diving: Boys: Im spring board (Group III): 1. Mihir Savla (Mah), 2. Himanshu Tiwari (UP), 3. Rohan Chandra (Ben), (205.25 pts).

Girls: High board: Group I: Rupalio Shah (Mah), 2. Pratha Kshirsagar (MP), 3. Debina Devi (Mah), (277.82 pts).

Group II: 1. Hrutika Shriram (Mah), 2. Sushmeeta Vasta (Goa), 3. Karishma M.Mohite (Kar), (262.65).

Group III: 1. Kejki Ajay Shinde (Mah), 2. Deepthi (Del), 3. Jagurti Satarkar (Mah), (176.85).
