Re-print of DVG's works released

BANGALORE: The chairperson of the Karnataka Sahitya Academy, Gita Nagbhushan, released the re-print of the complete works of the literary giant, the late D.V. Gundappa, here on Thursday. The Department of Kannada and Culture had published the first edition of the complete works in 11 volumes.

The noted writer Aa. Ra. Mitra spoke on the life and works of Gundappa, popularly known as DVG. The Secretary, Kannada and Culture, Usha Ganesh, presided over the function.

Copies of all the 11 volumes are available at the sales counter of the Department of Kannada and Culture, Kannada Bhavan, J.C. Road, Bangalore, and at all its district offices. — Staff Reporter

Procession disrupts traffic

Bangalore: Traffic on the busy Bangalore-Pune highway was disrupted for close to two hours on Thursday morning because of a massive procession by municipal sanitation workers from all over the State.

The procession, organised as part of a protest announced by the Karnataka Pourakarmikara Sangha, was to demand better wages and regularisation of those on daily wages and restoration of pensions. The sangha has threatened an indefinite strike by sanitation workers all over the State if the Government does not concede their demands soon enough or come to a negotiated settlement.

GO on release of advertisements

BANGALORE: The State Government has issued an order directing heads of all departments, public sector undertakings (PSUs), government-owned corporations, boards and local bodies to release advertisements to newspapers only through the Department of Information.

Till now, government departments, PSUs and corporations used to publish advertisements on their own, and that meant additional expenditure for the Government, the order says.

Addressing presspersons here on Thursday, the Minister for Information, B. Shivaram, said action will be taken against heads of departments or PSUs if ignore the order.

New posting for Shantanu Consul

BANGALORE: The services of Shantanu Consul, a 1974 Karnataka cadre IAS officer working as Principal Secretary, Department of Agriculture and Horticulture, are placed at the disposal of the Union Government, Department of Personnel and Training, New Delhi, for appointment as Administrator, Universal Services Obligation Fund, Department of Telecommunications, as Additional Secretary.

Collect certificates, principals told

Bangalore: The Karnataka Secondary Education Examination Board has asked the heads of institutions of all high schools in Bangalore North and South district to obtain the SSLC distinction pass certificates of the March 2005 examination from the Block Education Officer concerned immediately.

`Rotate chairmanship among minorities'

Bangalore: The Federation of Konkani Catholic Associations of Karnataka has demanded that the State Government should consider all minority communities, including Christians, Jains, Buddhists, Sikhs and Parsis, while appointing chairpersons of the Karnataka State Minorities Commission and the Karnataka Minorities Development Corporation. The federation representatives presented a memorandum to the Chief Minister, N. Dharam Singh on Wednesday. The federation chairman, V.R. Fernandes, said that there should be a rotation of chairmanship among the minority groups and alleged that Muslims have headed the Minorities Commission and Minorities Development Corporation ever since their establishment in 1983.

450 students to form `green brigade'

TUMKUR: As many as 450 students have been chosen from 15 government higher primary schools in Tumkur to participate in a programme to conserve nature and promote cleanliness in the city, under an environmental awareness project of the Union Human Resource Ministry. The students and 15 teachers will form a "Parisara Pade'' (green brigade) and take up environmental activities in the city. — Staff Correspondent

CD of Tulu film songs planned

MANGALORE: The Karnataka Tulu Sahitya Academy plans to bring out a compact disc of songs in Tulu films. A press release from Dugappa Kajekar, Registrar of the academy, said here that the objective of project is to preserve the songs. He said the academy has appealed to composers of Tulu songs and producers of Tulu films to permit it to bring out the CD. requested to send consent letters to the Registrar, Karnataka Tulu Sahitya Academy, MCC Building, Lalbagh, Mangalore - 575 003 (phone: 2459389). — Staff Correspondent

Awards for writers, translators

MYSORE: The Central Institute of Indian Languages (CIIL) has invited applications for the Bhasha Bharati Samman 2004-05. According to a press statement issued by the CIIL director, Udaya Narayana Singh, 22 awards, each of which carries a cash prize of Rs. 25,000, will be given to authors of books and translators. The book should be in one of the 22 Indian languages mentioned in the 8th Schedule of the Constitution, excluding Hindi and Sanskrit. The work should be in a language other than the author's mother tongue. Details are available on the website, www.ciil.org, and from the CIIL on phone (0821-2515820/2345007). `Appoint a Dalit as KPCC President'

BANGALORE: Lobbying is going on for the post of President of the Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC), and some members of the party are in favour of a member of the Scheduled Castes (SCs) or the Scheduled Tribes (STs) being selected. Their reasoning is that the Congress was defeated in the last Assembly election as it lost its traditional vote bank among SCs and STs. Some party members feel that those defeated in the Assembly and Lok Sabha elections should not be considered for the post. — Special Correspondent

Two killed in road accident

BIJAPUR: Two motorcyclists were killed when their vehicle hit a jeep on Basavanbagewadi-Huvinhipparagi road in Bijapur district. The names of the victims were given as Shankar Nijappa Myageri (20) and Raju Sanganna Biradar (25) of Budhihal village of the district. — UNI

DHARWAD: Daily wage workers attached to the University of Agricultural Sciences, Dharwad, who are on an indefinite strike seeking the regularisation of their services, observed a bandh on Wednesday.

The campus and the classrooms wore a deserted look with the teaching and non-teaching staff and the SC/ST Employees' Associations supporting the strike. The protesters also took out a procession. — Special Correspondent

Lightning kills three in Belgaum

Belgaum: Three children were killed on the spot and seven injured when they were struck by lightning in Jod Kurli village of Chikkodi taluk on Tuesday night.

The Minister for Agriculture Marketing and district in charge, Prakash B. Hukkeri, visited the spot.

Seven-year-old twins Sharnavva and Shivakka, daughters of Tayappa Yellappa Pujari, and their cousin, Mutthevva Kamble, 7, were killed on the spot when lightning struck them. — Staff Correspondent

Panel to submit report soon

DHARWAD: The high-power committee constituted to suggest reforms in the field of higher education in Andhra Pradesh is expected to submit its report by the end of this month.

This was indicated by M.I. Savadatti, former Vice-Chancellor of Mangalore University, who is a member of the committee constituted for the purpose.

Earlier, the Andhra Pradesh Government wanted the committee to submit the report quickly to enable it to make provisions to implement the recommendations in the current year's budget. The State Government has now indicated that it needs the report before the start of the academic year. — Special Correspondent

Students stage protest

DHARWAD : Hundreds of students from various schools and colleges took out a protest march here on Wednesday under the aegis of All India Democratic Students Organisation (AIDSO), District Committee, urging for timely distribution of textbooks.

The protest march began at Kadapa Maidan (Kalabhavan) here and reached the Deputy Commissioner's office via Subhash Road, Alur Venkatarao Circle and ended in a protest meeting at Court Circle. The joint secretary of AIDSO, State-unit, H.G. Desai, who spoke on the occasion alleged that the State Government is not focussed on education. — Staff Correspondent

Einstein Centre inaugurated

MYSORE: The new building block of the Mysore Public School housing biotechnology, physics and biology laboratories, was inaugurated here recently. The new block has been named Einstein Centre to mark the International Year of the Physics, which is being observed to commemorate the 100th anniversary of Theory of Relativity propounded by Albert Einstein. MYSORE: The Regional Museum of Natural History (RMNH) has arranged a special lecture by eminent geologist S. Sathyanarayana on Saturday to mark the International Museum Day. The programme will be held at the RMNH auditorium in Siddarthanagar at 3 p.m. — Special Correspondent.

Zoo youth club

MYSORE: The last date to become part of the Mysore Zoo's Youth Club is June 20 and the youth club programmes will commence from July 3. In a release, the Executive Director of Sri Chamarajendra Zoological Gardens said that those interested may avail of the opportunity and become members of the club, which is for those aged between 12 and 18 years. They may submit the applications along with a stamp-size photograph, blood group certificate, and an admission fee of Rs. 150, the release added. — Special Correspondent.

Free education for girls

Mysore: BEU, a charitable organisation, will fund the technical education of 10 meritorious and poor girls at the Farooquia Women's Polytechnic here. The charitable organisation will adopt 10 students joining the three-year diploma course. Cables stolen

MYSORE: Aluminium cables valued at Rs. 2 lakhs was stolen from a godown at Manasa Nagar by a gang on Thursday. The cables stored in the godown were meant for electrification works in the new locality being developed on the outskirts of the city. According to the police, the gang pelted stones at the watchman, who took to his heels. The gang then entered the godown and decamped with the cables.
