Three selected for Border-Gavaskar scholarship

NEW DELHI: Three promising youngsters — seamers Vikram Raj Vir Singh and Rudra Pratap Singh and batsman Cheteshwar Pujara — will attend a six-week programme at Australia's Commonwealth Bank Centre of Excellence as part of the annual Border-Gavaskar scholarship.

The scholarship programme was founded in 2000 as a joint initiative between Cricket Australia and the Australia-India Council (AIC). The players were selected by a Board of Control for Cricket in India panel headed by Sunil Gavaskar.

During their stay the players will receive specialist tutelage and development support from some of Australia's leading coaching staff, including head coach Tim Nielsen.

The players will participate in an emerging players tournament run by the CBCE in July involving the New Zealand Cricket Academy, Australian Institute of Sport Scholars and players from Karnataka.

Some of the players who have attended this programme are Mohammad Kaif, S. Sriram, S.S. Das, Parthiv Patel, L. Balaji, Gautam Gambhir and Shikhar Dhawan. — Special Correspondent
