Colombia, Netherlands advance to next round

EMMEN (The Netherlands): Colombia and the Netherlands advanced to the second round of the World Youth football championship on Wednesday, and defending champion Brazil earned its first win at the under-20 tournament by beating Switzerland 1-0.

Also, Syria upset Italy 2-1, leaving the European powerhouse on the brink of elimination in Group E.

Colombia topped Canada 2-0 in the other Group E match with two late goals from Falcao Garcia and Fredy Guarin, while the host blanked Australia 3-0 in Group A.

Brazil, which was held to a 0-0 draw by Nigeria in its opening match, got a 14th-minute goal from Gladstone to move to four points in Group F. In the other group match, South Korea beat Nigeria 2-1.

In an early match, 10-man Benin held on for a 1-1 draw against Japan in Group A.

China and Spain claimed the first two spots in the second round with wins on Tuesday.

The top two teams in each of the six groups and the four best third-place finishers advance to the next round.

The Netherlands got goals from captain Hedwiges Maduro, Urby Emanuelson and Rick Kruys to clinch first place in the group.

Benin is second with two points, and both Japan and Australia have one point.

Maduro opened the scoring in the 20th minute, heading home a corner kick from Emanuelson, and Emanuelson doubled the scored in the 46th off a pass from Quincy Owusu Abeyie.

Kruys added the third goal in the 74th when he drove home an angled shot from 20 metres (yards).

Gladstone headed in a corner at the near post in the to help Brazil improve to four points after two matches.

Group A:

At Kerkrade: Japan 1 drew with Benin 1; Netherlands 3 bt Australia 0.

Group E: At Tilburg: Colombia 2 bt Canada 0; Syria 2 bt Italy 1.

Group F: At Emmen: Brazil 1 bt Switzerland 0; South Korea 2 bt Nigeria 1. — AP
