More water release for Godavari delta

Farmers begin operations for second crop

RAJAHMUNDRY: Release of water to Godavari delta was increased on Thursday as farmers in both the Godavari districts began farm activities for a second crop. The water release was increased in the evening to 1,000 cusecs from 300 cusecs on Wednesday to the western delta and for eastern and central deltas, officials increased flows from 500 to 800 cusecs each.

The in-charge Superintendent of Irrigation Department circle office, C.V. Rammurthy, opened all the gates to Dhawaleswaram barrage by 7 a.m. on Wednesday to mark the release of waters. In the first hour, the department released 50 cusecs of water, it gradually increased to 500 cusecs by evening to central and eastern deltas, and western delta got only 300 cusecs by the same time. The tail end farmers will get water by 18 evening. About 10.13 lakh acres under Godavari delta area in both districts will be irrigated with the release of waters. The Irrigation officials had closed the gates on April 18 and surplus water of 4,000 to 5,000 cusecs has been going into sea from April 27. On Tuesday, 7,545 cusecs of water went into sea.

The water release was delayed by 20 days, compared to last year, when water was released on May 25. The repairs to sluices, flood-banks and bunds had forced the Irrigation officials to postpone the release of water twice in this month.
