Police reluctance to take complaints irks YSR

Special Correspondent

Alert sounded on emerging threat from white-collar criminals

HYDERABAD: The Chief Minister, Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, on Thursday spoke his mind on how personnel at several police stations refused to register complaints and sent back aggrieved persons without responding properly to their grievances.

Inaugurating the new office complex of the North Zone Deputy Commissioner of Police in Secunderabad, Dr. Reddy made it clear that cases had to be registered and solutions found. He did not approve of the ways of the police in not registering cases in order to avoid an increase in their work. The Home Minister, K. Jana Reddy, was present at the function.

Ending traffic chaos

The Chief Minister referred to traffic regulation as another major concern of the police. He called for inculcating discipline among road users and regulation of traffic.

He wanted the police to enhance the confidence of people in law and order machinery in view of criminals updating their methods making the best use of emerging techniques. White-collar crime was on the increase. Finance and chit firms came up with innovative schemes to cheat the gullible public. Land encroachments were also high in the city. No one knew who would take possession of land by criminal means.

Dr. Reddy appealed to the police to be citizen friendly.

A systemic change was required in the department in tune with changing times.

The police required minimum facilities to improve their functioning. There were not even chairs or tables in some police stations.

It would be good if every police station in the State got ISO certification. Similarly, there should be effective police officers to discharge duties. In the absence of such officers, people were likely to take law into their hands.
