NEW DELHI: After months of painstaking research by its engineers, Northern Railway is now finally ready with its first eco-friendly Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) locomotive. With trail runs on at its Shakurbasti locomotive shed in North-West Delhi, the cost-effective CNG engine is expected to be introduced on local and suburban routes in Delhi and Mumbai soon. Work on the ambitious project to replace diesel with CNG began last year but came a cropper due to some technical reasons. However, the engineers did not give up and started work on the project again at the beginning of this year. Sources said for over a month now trial runs have been conducted successfully and Northern Railway officials were awaiting a nod from higher authorities to commission it for regular operations. A senior Northern Railway official said introduction of CNG-run locomotives would help the organisation save money as CNG is available for almost half the price of diesel.
