HASSAN: The Hassan-Shravanabelagola railway line will be completed by July end and the trial run will begin from August, according to sources in the Southern Railway. The completion of this new line will help tourists and pilgrims, who will visit Shravanabelagola for the Mahamastakabhisheka in February next year. The civil work, including the construction of 126 bridges on the 45-km. stretch between Hassan and Shravanabelagola has been completed and linking work is on. The department has spent Rs. 78.75 crores so far. Work on the construction of the railway station at Shravanabelagola is fast progressing and will be completed soon. But work on the Hassan-Bangalore line is moving at a snail's pace because of land acquisition problems. The railways has completed the survey, but is unable to acquire land. Landowners are demanding a higher compensation than what the Government is offering.
Contracts awarded
Contracts estimated at Rs. 8 crores have been awarded to take up civil work on Shravanabelagola and B.G. Nagar (Bellur) line. The work on Bangalore-Nelamangala line will be completed next year as the land acquisition has been completed on that stretch, he said.
Broad gauge ready
The Hassan-Mangalore railway line will be opened for traffic by August after the gauge conversion between Sakleshpur and Subrahmanya is completed. The linking work is fast progressing and trial run will begin in October. The department has decided to allow freight traffic first. With this, work on Hassan-Mangalore will be completed and three new trains will be run between Mangalore and Mysore via Hassan.
Once work on Channarayapatna-Shravanabelagola line is completed, it will provide direct link between Mangalore and Shravanabelagola via Hassan.
The railways has announced the introduction of three new trains from Mysore to Mangalore via Hassan during the presentation of Railway budget and timings will be notified shortly, the sources added.
