Rs. 1,600-crore proposal to develop Chitradurga-Bijapur road

CHITRADURGA: H.D. Revanna, Minister for Power and Public Works, has said that the Union Surface Transport Department has cleared the project to develop a four-lane stretch of National Highway 13 between Chitradurga and Hospet.

Mr. Revanna was inaugurating a Rs. 1.15-crore bridge across the Suvarnamukhi at Kundalapur and a Rs. 3.5-crore power sub-station at Ranganathpura of Hiriyur taluk, around 45 km. from here, on Wednesday.

He said: "T.R. Balu, Union Minister for Road Transport, has approved Rs. 1,600-crore proposal for the construction of first phase of the four-lane road between Chitradurga and Bijapur and roadwork between Chitradurga and Hospet will be taken up immediately."

He promised to release Rs. 6 crores to Rs. 7 crores for the maintenance of 400 km. of State highway and inter-State roads in Chitradurga district.

He promised to provide quality power to Hiriyur division by drawing power from the Kaiga Atomic Power Station. Chitradurga district will get 12 new sub-stations and the existing 12 sub-stations will be upgraded, Mr. Revanna said.

The Government has spent Rs. 600 crores to regularise illegal pump sets of farmers and one transformer will be provided for every five pump sets to solve the low voltage problem.

The officers have been made accountable for electrocution and all the five electricity supply companies have been instructed to change old electric poles and update the power lines providing necessary funds, he said.

A proposal to appoint 2,250 linemen and 1,200 engineers on contract basis to solve the problem of shortage of staff has been approved, he said.

Tunga water

D. Manjunath, Minister for Higher Education, who presided over the function, said: "A proposal to bring water from Abbe falls to irrigate Chitradurga district is under serious consideration of the Government as the Tunga diversion project flagged off during the tenure of J.H. Patel failed to take off because of environmental reasons."

He lauded the good performance of Sthree Shakthi groups and called upon them to raise their voice against social evils such as consumption of liquor.

Upper Bhadra

N.Y. Hanumanthappa, MP, demanded implementation of the Upper Bhadra Project, which is long overdue.

He wanted liberal view to be taken till the irrigation facility is provided to drought-hit people of the district.

He wanted power authorities not to treat illegal power consumption as power theft. He wanted it to be called unauthorised power consumption and not power theft as a farmer resorts to such an action to sustain his life.

Mr. Hanumanthappa pointed out that Naxalism is gaining ground because of unemployment. He wanted the banks to expedite loan applications of farmers and not dodge them.

H.S. Shivashankarappa, Member of Legislative Council, spoke.
