VISAKHAPATNAM: The Congress utilised the launch of its Prajahita Yatra to talk about its chances in the forthcoming civic elections and expressed confidence about its victory. The first phase of the yatra, aimed at highlighting the achievements of the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) and the Congress at the Centre and the State, respectively, will go on till June 30. Visakhapatnam is the first district to launch the yatra in the State. The Andhra Pradesh Congress Committee president, K. Keshava Rao, who was scheduled to flag off the yatra, could not make it, as he had to rush to Delhi. The Visakha-II MLA, S. Ranga Raju, flagged off the rally at the party office at Yellammathota on Thursday evening. Addressing party activists, the city Congress committee president, Dronamraju Srinivasa Rao, accused the TDP of giving Visakhapatnam a step-motherly treatment during its nine-year rule. Development of information technology (IT) was confined only to Hyderabad in the TDP regime, whereas the Chief Minister, Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, was promoting Visakhapatnam as a second-tier IT destination. Besides, several welfare programmes, like Indira Prabha, Rajiv Yuva Shakti, Rajiv Internet village, Ambedkar Jaladhara, etc., have been launched to benefit various sections. Housing was being given top priority. Dr. Reddy had earmarked Rs. 225 crores for the development of Visakhapatnam, Mr. Srinivasa Rao pointed out. The Congress had won majority in MCV twice and would do so for the third time, he said. During the programme, the welfare schemes should be taken to the people by the cadres and all the leaders would work for it, Mr Raju said.
