Veerappan's wife challenges freezing of bank deposits

Special Correspondent

CHENNAI: Muthulakshmi, wife of slain forest brigand Veerappan, has challenged the freezing of her six fixed bank deposits, totalling Rs. 3 lakhs, lying with a Salem branch of the State Bank of Mysore.

In her petition in the Madras High Court on Thursday, Ms. Muthulakshmi said she made six fixed deposits of Rs. 50,000 each, in the name of her two daughters and herself, individually as well as jointly. The deposits were made in June 2003 for 10 years.

However, after the killing of her husband on October 18, 2004, she was in dire need of money for the education of her two daughters, Vijayalakshmi and Vidyarani. When she wrote to the bank for withdrawing the sum, she was informed that the deposits were frozen following a communication from the Special Task Force of Karnataka and Tamil Nadu.
