Excise auction fetches good revenue

MANGALORE: An auction conducted by the Excise Department to determine arrack-vending rights for Dakshina Kannada district for 2005-06 has yielded good revenue. The auction to determine vending rights for Puttur and Sullia taluks will be held on Saturday at 2.30 p.m. in Cubbon Park, Bangalore.

While the monthly bid from excise contractors from Mangalore, Bantwal and Belthangady taluks for 2004-05 was Rs. 3.91 crores, it has gone up to Rs. 5.2 crores for 2005-06, an increase of 32.80 per cent, according to the Deputy Commissioner (Excise), Shakir Ahmad, here on Thursday.

Man dies in accident

MANGALORE: A police constable attached to the Mangalore North (Bunder) police station died when an unidentified vehicle dashed against the motorcycle he was riding near Pavanje along National Highway 17 in Mulki police station limits on Wednesday. The victim, Nitin Kumar (24), a resident of Padubidri in Udupi district, had joined the police force in 2002.

Although he was taken to a private hospital, Nitin died of injuries. Mulki police have registered a case and are investigating. — Staff Correspondent

Two killed

BIJAPUR: Two motorcyclists were killed when their vehicle hit a jeep on Basavanbagewadi-Huvinhipparagi road in Bijapur district. The names of the victims were given as Shankar Nijappa Myageri (20) and Raju Sanganna Biradar (25) of Budhihal village of the district. — UNI

Workers observe bandh

DHARWAD: Daily wage workers attached to the University of Agricultural Sciences, Dharwad, who are on an indefinite strike seeking the regularisation of their services, observed a bandh on Wednesday.

The campus and the classrooms wore a deserted look with the teaching and non-teaching staff and the SC/ST Employees' Associations supporting the strike. The protesters also took out a procession. — Special Correspondent

Lightning kills three

Belgaum: Three children were killed on the spot and seven injured when they were struck by lightning in Jod Kurli village of Chikkodi taluk on Tuesday night.

The Minister for Agriculture Marketing and district in charge, Prakash B. Hukkeri, visited the spot.

Seven-year-old twins Sharnavva and Shivakka, daughters of Tayappa Yellappa Pujari, and their cousin, Mutthevva Kamble, 7, were killed on the spot when lightning struck them. — Staff Correspondent

Zoo youth club

MYSORE: The last date to become part of the Mysore Zoo's Youth Club is June 20 and the youth club programmes will commence from July 3. In a release, the Executive Director of Sri Chamarajendra Zoological Gardens said that only a few more seats are left. those interested may avail of the opportunity and become members of the club, which is for those aged between 12 and 18 years. They may submit the applications along with a stamp-size photograph, blood group certificate, and an admission fee of Rs. 150, the release added. — Special Correspondent.
