MANGALORE: With less than 12 days to go for a new Mayor to assume office, the list of aspirants vying for the post appears to be growing. Lobbying has also increased over the past few days. The council of the Mangalore City Corporation has 60 seats of which the Congress holds 41 and the Bharatiya Janata Party 14. Members are nominated to five seats. The Mayor's post has always been keenly contested. This time, the post has been reserved for candidates from the 2A Category, as a result of which many contestants are lobbying for the post. Some senior members of the council including Padmanabha Amin, Vijaya Arun, former Mayor K. Diwakar and K. Ashraf are the main contenders for the post. According to the Commissioner of the corporation, V.S. Nayak, 2A Category has many castes under it, which has increased the number of aspirants for the post. It is said that many aspirants have met the Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee President, B. Janardhana Poojary, in this regard but he has refused to get drawn into the process of choosing the Mayor. A group is also said to be in touch with the former Chief Minister M. Veerappa Moily, who is also reportedly not keen on getting embroiled in the selection process. Mr. Amin appears to be closer to the post as he is recognised by many as a workhorse. But Mr. Ashraf, who is young and is from the minority community, may emerge as a dark horse. Ms. Vijaya Arun, who is also in the race, has found favour with many women corporators.
