IN DANGER: The films will show the life of tigers in the reserve forests of Panna and Kanha
CHENNAI: Want to learn more about protection accorded to the big cats? Are tigers in our forests really safe from poachers? What is their population in the wild? These questions will be answered during the screening of short films on two tiger reserves in central India Panna and Kanha. The films, made by Shekar Dattatri, will be screened at Book Point auditorium, Anna Salai, on Saturday at 7 p.m. The 15-minute films will be followed by an interactive session, say volunteers of the Nature Quest, organisers of the event. On Panna - the jewel of central India Mr. Dattatri says that the reserve, set in the Vindhyan plateau, is spread over 543 sq km, in the northern Madhya Pradesh. The picturesque national park has imposing plateaus and deep gorges. Adding splendour to the rugged landscape is the magnificent Ken River. Tigers are the main attraction for visitors to Panna, which is home to a variety of wildlife, including leopards and sloth bears.
Wildlife
Among the herbivores, nilgai, sambhar, chital, chousingha and chinkara can be sighted. Over 200 species of birds have been recorded. The second tiger reserve in that State, Kanha, is visited by nearly 50,000 people annually. Here again the tigers are the star attraction. But what does it take to protect Kanha's tigers and other wildlife? In a country of one billion people, how does a tiger reserve like Kanha manage to thrive? Get your answers from Mr. Shekar at the programme.
