`Chandrika will present proposal in Parliament'

V.S. Sambandan

COLOMBO: The Sri Lankan President, Chandrika Kumaratunga, has decided to present her proposal for an administrative mechanism with the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam in Parliament, the state-run Daily News said on Thursday.

The newspaper said Ms. Kumaratunga had "arrived at this decision following discussions with her Cabinet Ministers and the leader of the Government's coalition partners."

"The Government decided that the Tsunami Relief Council [a recent coinage for the P-TOMS] should be implemented and at the same time agreed to submit this to Parliament. The Government and the LTTE will sign the document in due course," the newspaper said.

Thursday's report of the planned Presidential move is against the backdrop of a pullout by the JVP from the ruling coalition.

The Opposition United National Party said it had decided to keep away from parliamentary discussions on the proposed joint mechanism. "We don't consider it a matter to be brought before Parliament. We will not participate," the UNP spokesperson, Gamini Lakshman Peiris, told The Hindu on Thursday.
