India's role in prevention of AIDS crucial, says Kofi Annan

Special Correspondent

CHENNAI: United Nations Secretary General Kofi Annan has stressed the importance of India's role in the prevention and treatment of HIV/AIDS.

In a letter to Union Health Minister Anbumani Ramadoss, he said: "India's leadership in this area is crucial and could change the face of the epidemic in the region, and your commitment has been critical in giving priority to this major global challenge."

Recalling his recent trip to New Delhi, he said it was moving to hear the stories of people living with HIV/AIDS and "to understand their motivation and courage, despite their situation, to speak out about the disease so that others may protect themselves. Clearly, people living with HIV/AIDS have a vital role to play in efforts to raise awareness and prevent the spread of the virus. Thus, it is doubly important that we reach out to all levels of society to end the stigma and discrimination that surrounds HIV/AIDS."
