Kidnapped girl's father commits suicide

Devesh K. Pandey

Girl traced after the death

NEW DELHI: After a yearlong struggle to bring back his minor daughter who had allegedly eloped with a young man in April last year, a middle-aged man allegedly hanged himself at his Jaunapur residence in South Delhi on June 4. And only a few days after he died, his daughter was rescued by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) from Uttam Nagar in West Delhi.

After she allegedly eloped with a young man on April 25 last year, Satpal lodged a kidnapping case with the Mehrauli police as she was a minor. When the local police could not trace her, Satpal approached the then Police Commissioner, who transferred the case to the Crime Branch for further investigations. At Satpal's instance, the Crime Branch arrested the brother and the mother of the accused but they could not trace him.

These two persons were later reportedly let off by a Delhi court as the police could not establish their involvement in the case. However, Satpal as a last resort then decided to move the Supreme Court with a writ seeking intervention.

Finally, the case was transferred to the CBI this May. Subsequently, the CBI launched a search operation. However, Satpal apparently lost patience and gradually went into depression as "he was unable to face his relatives and area residents after his daughter went missing". On June 4, Satpal was found hanging from the ceiling.

Ironically, 10 days after his death, his daughter was traced and brought back, while the man with whom she had allegedly eloped was arrested by the CBI at Mayapuri.
