ERODE: Farmers have urged the district administration to order the release of water in the Kalingarayan canal immediately.
Customary date
Uaually, after the annual closure of 45 days, water will be released for irrigation from June 15, which is customary. This time when the farmers represented the district administration during the last grievances day, the Public Works Department officials said that recommendations were made to the State Government for the release of water as per the schedule. Expecting that water would be released on the scheducled date, the farmers had made some preliminary arrangements to raise paddy nursery on their lands.
`Inform us in advance'
Demanding release of water within fifteen days, the farmers urged the Public Works Department to inform them well in advance, so that they could prepare their land well for cultivating paddy. The PWD officials said that as some repair works were in progress in the canal, water release would be delayed. A bridge across the canal was also under construction in Periya Agraharam near Erode at a cost of Rs. 9 lakhs, the officials said. The Erode MLA, K.S. Thennarasu, gave the amount from his Constituency Development Fund. The farmers said that they had adequate water in the wells. A meagre quantity could be released from the canal immediately, so that the stagnated effluent water in the canal could be washed away.
Discharge of effluents
The farmers said if the dyers and tanners discharged effluents in the canal further, it would percolate the agricultural and domestic wells and the water would be contaminated and become unusable.
