KUMBAKONAM: Thirubuvanam Silk Handloom Weavers' Cooperative Production and Sales Society Ltd. (Thico Silks) at Thirubuvanam in Thanjavur district has won the ISO 9001:2000 certification from the British Standard Institution (BSI) India Ltd. The certification was given by B. Venkata Rao of BSI India Ltd to M. E. Balraj, special officer of the society, at Kumbakonam on June 8. P. Mohandoss, Assistant Director of Handlooms and Textiles, was present on the occasion. According to Mr. Balraj and T. Vedaraj, handloom officer of the society, Thico Silks was the first handloom weavers' cooperative society in Tamil Nadu to get ISO 9001-2000 certification. There are 1800 members in the society. Its annual sales turnover is around Rs.30 crores and it has plans to raise the turnover up to Rs.50 crores by March 2006. The society aims at diversifying its production to export its products. "We have decided to implement quality management system in accordance with ISO 9001:2000 standard. We implement the system with the guidance of Textiles Committee of the Government for the past one year," Mr. Balraj said. The society produces silk sarees worth Rs.1.5 crores every month. The prices range from Rs. 2,500 to Rs. 30,000 a saree. "We have become a member of Silk Export Promotion Council, Mumbai, and Handloom Export Promotion Council recently," Mr. Balraj said. Mr. Vedaraj said that the society has modern dyeing units, which keep the environment clean. Weavers in Thirubuvanam, Thiruvidaimaruthur, Ammanchathiram and Kumbakonam are its members. We sold silk sarees worth Rs.33 lakhs on May 11, 2005 (i.e., on Akshaya Thrithiya Day). Some of our designs are popular for the past 25 years. "Vanasingaram" is one such a design, which will have designs of all animals in the forest. The society has been making profits continuously for the past 25 years. In spite of drought and other natural calamities like tsunami, the society made a profit of Rs. 2.94 crores last year, Mr. Vedaraj said. The society is going to celebrate its golden jubilee in September this year.
