IAF hopeful of positive response on garbage yard

Staff Reporter

Safety of pilots, aircraft, IAF base and local residents in jeopardy

TAMBARAM: Air Commodore M.S. Ahluwalia, Air Officer Commanding, Indian Air Force (IAF) station, Tambaram, said on Friday that he was hopeful of a positive response from the State Government to their objections to the setting up of a garbage dumping yard at Venkatamangalam near Vandalur.

Mr. Ahluwalia said IAF officers met senior officers of the Municipal Administration department and expressed their concerns. He said such a project where several tonnes of garbage are dumped everyday would pose a serious hazard to aircraft taking off and landing at the IAF base in Tambaram.

He said such massive garbage dumping projects are usually not undertaken within at least 10 km of the radius of airports and air bases where there flying activity is very high.

Mr. Ahluwalia was talking to presspersons after the passing out parade at the IAF Tambaram. More than 500 airmen were inducted into the IAF today after the completion of their 24 weeks of training programme here. The recruits had come to Tambaram after finishing their basic training in Belgaum. Among those who passed out were five airmen from Sri Lanka, who had come to India through an exchange programme.
