`Fascist forces trying to divide tsunami victims'

Staff Reporter

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Leaders of political parties and social activists have accused the Government of giving fascist forces an opportunity to divide the tsunami-affected coastal population in the State along communal lines in the name of rehabilitation.

At a convention organised in the city on Friday, the participants alleged that the Government had failed to implement rehabilitation measures in a democratic manner by enlisting the support of Local Self-Government Bodies. Inaugurating the convention, P.K.R. Warrier, senior medical practitioner and social activist, said the Government was following a policy of divide and rule. "Tsunami victims are being divided along communal lines with the Matha Amrithanandamayi Math on the one side and the Christian missionaries on the other," Dr. Warrier said.

The CPI assistant secretary Panniyan Raveendran wanted to know why, even six months after the tragedy, the Government did not have any record of the number of victims affected by the calamity.
