Ban on softwood transport sought
Staff Reporter
KOCHI:
The Kerala State Match Splints & Veneers Manufacturers Association has urged the Government to ban the transport of softwood from Kerala to neighbouring States. This was essential to save the industry, which was in dire straits, Association president K.V. Mathew said here on Saturday.
Raising serious objections to the Value-Added Tax (VAT) provision to impose 4 per cent purchase tax on softwood consumed by match splints and veneer-manufacturing units, he said that the move would spell doom for the industry.
Veneer manufacturers buy softwood from individuals and hence are outside the purview of VAT provisions for returning the remitted tax as applicable in the case of deals involving registered suppliers.
