MADURAI: Madurai has been chosen as venue for the foundation laying ceremony of the Rs. 2,233-crore Sethusamudram channel project. Prime Minister, Manmohan Singh, Congress president Sonia Gandhi, Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam president M. Karunanidhi and Union Finance Minister P. Chidambaram will participate in the function. The date will be announced tomorrow, Union Minister for Shipping T.R. Baalu told presspersons here on Saturday. A formal invitation will be sent to Chief Minister Jayalalithaa, he said. The venue comprises 50 acres of agricultural land along the Inner Ring Road on the city outskirts. The announcement of the venue assumes significance in the wake of a threat issued by a section of fishermen and non-governmental organisations that they would greet Dr. Singh and other Ministers with black flags. The Movement Against Sethusamudram Shipping Channel Project, an umbrella organisation of fishermen associations and non-governmental organisations, on Friday announced that it would launch an agitation during the Prime Minister's visit, besides staging a rail roko. The project would wipe out the already dwindling fish stock in the Gulf of Mannar and Palk Straits, it said. However, Mr. Baalu said that Madurai was chosen for its "easy connectivity by air and from the security point of view." Road connectivity would also enable people from the peninsular region to participate.
