CHAMARAJANAGAR: Ponnachi Mahadevaswamy, Janata Dal (Secular) leader and a close associate of the former Minister, the late H. Nagappa, said on Saturday that he saw the forest brigand, Veerappan, before he abducted Nagappa. Appearing before the Justice R.G. Vaidyanatha Committee, which has been appointed to go into the circumstances leading to the abduction and killing of Nagappa, he said hundreds of party members and Nagappa were surrounded by armed men from Veerappan's gang during the election campaign of 1989. They threatened people to cast their vote in favour of the Congress, he said.
`Sudden appearance'
To a question on whether the matter was brought to the notice of the police, Mr. Mahadevaswamy said Nagappa explained the "sudden appearance of Veerappan's gang" to the Superintendent of Police over telephone. Mr. Mahadevaswamy said the members of the family of Nagappa appealed to the Government to withdraw the police force deployed to arrest Veerappan and take steps to negotiate with the brigand for Nagappa's release. The inquiry will continue on Sunday.
Supporters questioned
Before inquiring Mr. Mahadevaswamy, the committee questioned the supporters of Nagappa, including Kiran, a resident of Kongalli Halla, Puttamadaiah of Tellanur, Firozuddin Khan of Bandalli in Kollegal taluk. The Hanur MLA and widow of Nagappa, Parimala Nagappa, her son, Preetham, and Venkataramana Nayaka will appear before the committee on Sunday.
Term to be extended
The Justice R.G. Vaidhyanatha Committee's term, which ends in September, is likely to be extended. Mr. Vaidyanathan told pressperson that so far, the committee has interrogated the Assistant Commissioner of Kollegal and the Deputy Commissioner of Chamarajanagar, 17 police officers including the Special Task Force chief, Jyothi Prakash Mirji, and the Superintendent of Police, Harishekaran.
