CHITRADURGA: The Minister for Social Welfare, Y. Nagappa, said that special schemes have been chalked out to introduce the ideology and the achievements of personalities such as former Chief Minister, the late Devaraj Urs. Addressing a gathering after laying the foundation stone for the Devaraj Urs Bhawan here on Saturday, he said that the nation would not progress unless the caste system is eradicated. "Devaraj Urs was a great leader. He was the voice of the silent majority and addressed the problem of social justice effectively," Mr. Nagappa added. Around 1,000 students of the Scheduled Caste and the Scheduled Tribe communities will be trained in Nursing for three years. He said that another 1,500 students will also be trained in computers at the new bhawan. Speaking on the occasion, N.Y. Hanumanthappa, MP expressed concern over the neglect of backward classes in the State. "Most beneficiaries who have gained from the reservation system have shaped their careers. But, once they achieved success, they forget their backgrounds," he said. The Minister for Higher Education, D. Manjunath, recalled the services of Devaraj Urs and urged the people to follow the principles of social justice. Presiding over the function, G.H. Thippa Reddy MLA of Chitradurga listed out the achievements of Devaraj Urs. He stated that the latter had introduced new faces, especially from the oppressed classes, into the political arena in the State. H. Anjaneya, the MLA of Bharama Sagara and G.M. Siddeshwar, MP for Davanagere also spoke.
