Facility to ensure pedestrian safety

Staff Reporter

BANGALORE: Crossing busy roads has become a daunting task for pedestrians in Bangalore. Many victims of accidents are pedestrians. The traffic police admit that they do not have adequate number of personnel to man all crossings.

Pedestrians in the city will now have a reliable safety feature. In phases, most one-way roads willhave signals which pedestrians themselves can operate. There will be switches on poles near the crossings that have traffic signals. When there are sufficient numbers of walkers who need to cross, one of them can just flip the switch and the signal will be activated. Vehicles will have to stop to enable pedestrians to cross the road safely.

Two such pedestrian operated signals installed on Victoria Road and near Queen's Circle are working satisfactorily, and the city traffic police plan to install eight more. They will be located at K.G. Road, Infantry (Bhagwan Mahaveer) Road, Richmond Road, Residency Road, near Ulsoor Bus Stand, near Muthu Mariamma Temple in K.R. Puram and on Cunningham Road near Wockhardt Hospital. Vehicles which do not stop at such signals to enable pedestrians to cross will be fined heavily, the police said.
