This Day That Age
The Portuguese police opened fire on a party of Indian policemen stationed near the Indo-Diu border and kidnapped a constable on duty, according to reports reaching Rajkot on June 18. The Portuguese fired ten rounds and the constable was detained at Simar fort for two hours and later released. A small creek separates the Portuguese territory from the Indian mainland. The Indian constable was on duty on the Indian side when a number of Portuguese policemen crossed the creek and swooped on him and carried him away before others on the Indian side could be alerted. Meanwhile, Mr. V.G. Deshpande, MP and Secretary of the All-India Hindu Mahasabha, who headed 46 unarmed Indian volunteers and marched into Goa on June 18, was arrested at Pangini, about 25 miles within Goa, and taken to an unknown place, reports reaching the border town of Karwar said. Forty-four of the 46 volunteers who crossed into Goa were beaten up by the Portuguese police and thrown back on the Indian border. One volunteer, who collapsed as a result of the beatings, was removed to a hospital in Cancona.
