MALAPPURAM: A New Delhi-based think-tank, Delhi Policy Group, will organise a workshop on `Comprehensive security in South Asia' at Calicut University on July 4. The day-long workshop, at the seminar complex on the campus, is aimed at familiarising the faculty and students of the university and its colleges with the complex problems relating to security and its various dimensions. The workshop will be held in association with Kunhali Marakkar Centre for West Asian Studies and Chair for Maritime Studies and Research. For a long time, scholars specialising in matters of national security had viewed security from a State-centric militarist standpoint, E.K.G. Nambiar, convener of the programme, said. The workshop will be an attempt to break away from the earlier viewpoint on matters of security. This will be the first such workshop to be organised in the State. Among the resource persons who will guide the seminar are Lt. Gen. V.R. Raghavan, adviser to the Delhi Policy Group; T.K. Oommen, sociologist; Swaran Singh, associate professor at Jawaharlal Nehru University; Prof. E.K.G. Nambiar, head of Kunhali Marakkar Centre for West Asian Studies, Calicut University; and V. Suryanarayanan, professor for maritime studies and research. The workshop will be funded by Delhi Policy Group, a non-profit organisation backed by corporate institutions. In the past five years, the Delhi Policy Group has organised a large number of workshops, lectures and conferences in different parts of South Asia on issues relating to comprehensive security.
