KANNUR: Human rights activist, writer and commentator Ninan Koshy said on Sunday that imperialism in its old model of using military power to enforce hegemony over the world is being practised by the United States (U.S.). Delivering a keynote address on `Imperialism and occupation' at the district conference of the All India Peace and Solidarity Organisation (AIPSO), Dr. Koshy said the post-9/11 war on terror marked the proclamation of the establishment of the U.S. empire. The U.S. imperialism had now been academically accepted, though there were differences over whether the empire was good or bad for the world, he said. The U.S. document `Project for a new century' drafted before 9/11 set out the doctrine that military power should be used to create hegemony over the world. While new military theories were being formulated to justify the empire, the U.S. attack on Iraq was a demonstration that coming wars will be for regime change and occupation to control resources in different regions, Dr. Koshy said. America's new nuclear doctrine called for making usable nuclear weapons, he said, adding that the U.S. was now encouraging nuclear competition. The greatest setback for world peace, he said, was the fact that India and Japan had left the peace camp and joined the war camp led by the U.S. This shift in Asia should disturb peace activists in the region, he added. Earlier, the AIPSO district conference was inaugurated by AIPSO State vice-president Shivashankara Pillai. AIPSO activists N.C. Mammootty, Puzhakkal Vasudevan, P.K. Gangadharan Nair, Pallipram Balan and C.O.T. Ummar were among those present at the function.
