KOZHIKODE: The Thondayad-Pantheerankavu bypass, part of the ambitious Kozhikode bypass project, will be opened to the public in December. With the commissioning of the second phase of the bypass, work on the third phase of the project, Thondayad-Malapparamba bypass, will also be inaugurated, according to M.K. Muneer, Minister for Public Works. Work on the Thondayad-Pantheerankavu road is nearing completion. Another layer of gravel will be spread on this 6-km stretch. Tarring works will be started only after that process. Along with these road construction activities, work on the Mampuzha bridge was also being carried out in a speedy manner. The construction of the 150-m-long bridge having a width of 7.5 m is also in the last phase of completion. The bridge consists of four spans. Footpaths have also been constructed on both sides. It was on July 2, 2003, the then Union Minister for Roads, Transport and Highways B.C. Khanduri inaugurated the work on Thondayad-Pantheerankavu road. The total estimate of the project is Rs.14 crores. The work was entrusted to the Vadakara-based Urangal Labour Cooperative Society. The Kozhikode bypass consists of 28 km from Idimoozhikkal to Vengalam. The first phase and the most important of the phases from Idimoozhikkal to Pantheerankavu was opened to traffic on June 6, 2002. The implementation of the third phase from Thondayad to Malapparamba will begin in December.The last phase of the project from Malapparamba to Vengalam consists of constructing the Korappuzha bridge.
