Leopard skins seized; doctor, 5 others arrested

BHUBANESWAR: A joint raid by the police and forest officials on a clinic in G. Udayagiri in Orissa's Kandhmal district on Saturday led to the seizure of skins of two leopards. A doctor, the owner of the clinic and four others have been arrested.

Acting on a tip-off that tiger skins were being smuggled out from G. Udayagiri, a special squad of forest and police officials, under the direct supervision of Phulbani Superintendent of Police J. Ramchandra Rao, was formed. Two forest officials of the team, posing themselves as traders, contacted a person to strike a deal for procurement of tiger skins. They were asked by the smugglers to bring Rs. 70,000 for the skins and report at Baliguda. Later they were asked to come to the clinic of Dr. Sapan Pradan. The special squad then raided the clinic and seized the two leopard skins and arrested the doctor. — UNI
