KOTTAYAM: The Government has betrayed cooperative societies who are engaged in market intervention to stabilise paddy prices, Leader of the Opposition V.S. Achuthanandan has said. Speaking at the launch of development projects at Nattakom Grama Panchayat, near here, on Saturday, Mr. Achuthanandan said the continuing crisis in the paddy sector was a result of a nexus between the UDF Government and rice mill owners, he said. By encouraging cooperative societies to enter the procurement Market, and going back on their earlier promise to procure paddy from them at remunerative prices, the Government had pushed these primary cooperatives into a deep crisis, Mr. Achuthanandan said. He would take up the matter with the Chief Minister and Food Ministers shortly. Speaking to mediapersons at Changanassery, he said investigations into the Kiliroor and Kaviyoor incidents would bring out the truth.
